Importance
The Holy Kromak was the prophesied champion of the Arkos people within The Kingdom of Wonakaros, said to be sent by the gods to crush their weak kin, The Kingdom of Narok, and unite all Arkos once more. Rather than their gods, the Arkos people were unaware that The Shai Domani had been the source of both the prophesy, and the champion himself. Raised by The Dril, The Holy Kromak was planted among the Arkos, their intended puppet. He ruled over The Kingdom of Wonakaros for decades, maintaining stability among the tribes of his people and encouraging countless bloody raids against Narok.
Biography
Pre-Birth
Many generations before the birth of The Holy Kromak, a prophecy arose among the people of Wonakaros that claimed a champion would be sent from the gods to unite their people and crush Narok. Unbeknownst to the Arkos population, however, the prophecy had been created by The Council of The Shai Domani and spread throughout the desert by their agents. The Dril Council saw the growing stability of The Kingdom of Narok as a potential threat, one that could possibly grow strong enough to form an Arkos empire in the far future. Seeking to disrupt the stability and weaken the eastern Arkos realm, they created the prophecy with the intension of using the false campion as their puppet to wage devastating raids upon Narok.
An Arkos In The Snow
In the year 36 BVE, long after the prophecy had become an accepted fact among the western Arkos population over the generations, The Shai Domani discovered their false champion. Possessing evidence that several Arkos of the past had been born with two sets of arms, an extremely rare occurrence, they spread the belief that the prophesied champion would have such a trait. When they at last received word that a child with four arms had been born, Dril agents swiftly kidnapped the child and took him deep into The Shai Domani.
This child, the future Holy Kromak, was raised to become their puppet. They taught him their ways and the ways of the people he would one day be expected to rule over.
Trained by assassins to fight, and mentored by Dril scholars, Krom, as he was affectionately called by those closest to him, slowly grew disillusioned with his purpose. He began to resent the Dril that had both kidnapped him and forced the massive burden of becoming their puppet upon his shoulders. Having never seen his homeland since his birth, and greatly disliking his Dril mentors, be grew to feel severed from the world itself, without a people of his own and lacking any beliefs to truly believe in.
A United Wonakaros
In the year 20 BVE, Krom was taken from the snowy home he had grown to dislike so greatly and unleashed into the desert homeland he felt nothing for. Though entirely disillusioned, he didn’t forsake his unwanted purpose entirely. It took little time for the people of Wonakaros to recognize him as their prophesied champion. Within the year, he was hailed by all the tribes of the deep desert as their Holy Kromak, ruler of Wonakaros.
Making the ancient city of Arkos-Tul his seat of power, he ruled over the desert. He kept a loose grip upon his kingdom, serving to keep the tribes united beneath one throne, though otherwise permitting them to enact their own laws.
Despite his dislike for the Dril Council, their sway over him remained, as he knew they could reveal what he truly was and cause his downfall. However, he also knew that revealing such a massive secret would endanger their own interests greatly, and thus they cooperated with each other in an uneasy alliance.
As the years passed and he grew accustomed to his position as the holy ruler of Wonakaros, he fell utterly in love with a concubine named Sarak. Her complete devotion to their people and love for their homeland and traditions inspired Krom to rule over his fellow Arkos wisely and fairly. Though he never felt a bond with his own species, Sarak did, and thus he honored her by striving to ensure that all Arkos thrived beneath his throne. Together they attempted to have several children over the years, though all were stillbirths until they produced a living daughter much later.
During his early reign, The Holy Kromak utilized the training and knowledge he had received from The Agents of Shai to create an elite Order of assassins of his own, known as The Tolkarik Assassins. They served their holy ruler with fanatic devotion, earning a deadly reputation.
A Long Reign
At the beginning of the year 1 AVE, after countless tales of The Vaid Empire’s rise had spread throughout the desert, The Holy Kromak received a request from the latest Dril Potentate, Varse of Clan Chalvarrus, to meet in person to discuss an important matter. As no outsider was permitted to enter The Holy City of Arkos-tul, Krom traveled with much of his court to meet the Dril and his Agents deep in the desert, forming a temporary tent city while they waited.
Upon The Potentate’s arrival, he spoke with Varse in the Dril language to mask their words. The Potentate explained the critical danger that the new Vaid Empire offered towards them both, and proposed to have all of Wonakaros invade The Vaid Empire to cut down the human God Emperor before his power and influence grew too great.
“Potentate Varse, you request a war that shall harm my people, a war that I cannot grant you. However, there are alternatives…”
– The Holy Krom, To Potentate Varse, 1 AVE.
Though he refused The Potentate’s request, he instead offered to send his Tolkarik assassins to infiltrate The God Emperor’s harem and end his life.
With their agreement settled, Krom returned to Arkos-tul to resume his reign. Caring little for the concerns of The Potentate, he took his time sending his assassins, using a merchant to present them to the human ruler as false gifts from the king of Narok, Torakeom. Four in total, they served The God Emperor as concubines, bearing his children and earning his trust. It wasn’t until the end of 2 AVE that The Kromak received the news that all four had perished in an assassination attempt, leaving the human ruler injured, though alive.
Knowing The Vaid Empire was in its infancy, decades away from possessing the power necessary to trample Narok and cross the desert, if The Empire survived The God Emperor’s consuming ambition, The Holy Kromak turned his attention from the concerns of The Potentate and focused upon his rule over his people.
Soon after, Sarak gave birth to her only living daughter, Saros. Though Krom had sired many offspring with his harem, Saros was the first of his daughters to receive his official acknowledgment out of his love for Sarak. She received all the privileges and duties that a daughter of The Holy Kromak was expected to possess. A year later, Sarak convinced Krom to acknowledge the daughter he had produced with another of his concubines, naming her Naram, and a third daughter years later, named Karak. Though he had acknowledged three of his children out of respect for his favorite concubine’s wishes, he cared only for the daughter they shared together, giving Saros the entirety of his attention.
Mere months after officially acknowledging Karak and accepting the girl as part of his court, Sarak fell pregnant a final time. During the birth, in which she produced another stillborn, she passed away due to complications from the birth. Krom was left devastated.
Eventually, having rebuilt his Tolkarik Assassins with new recruits, he gave the duty of leadership over his assassins to his second official daughter, Naram, when she reached maturity.
On the 38th of Fixuin, 20 AVE, Naram returned from a meeting with Dril agents deep within the desert. She brought a message from The Potentate himself, informing him that The Vaid Empire was crossing the mountains separating Arkos lands from human lands, and that he intended to send a group of Shai agents to join forces with his Tolkarik assassins to aid them against The God Emperor.
On the 10th of Silla, 20 AVE, The Holy Kromak performed his monthly duty by consummating the month’s fertility ritual. A typical ceremony, a fertile girl from one of the nomad tribes beneath his rule was sent to be impregnated by The Holy Kromak, thus blessing the entire Arkos population with enhanced fertility for the night, or so his people believed. Saros and Naram watched their father breed in the ancient plaza of Arkos-Tul, as was their duty, and he ignored their quiet bickering.
The next month, on the 3rd of Senin, he and the elders of Arkos-Tul gathered to watch the ceremony for the departure of The Tolkarik Assassins. He warned Naram against failing him, reminding her that thousands would did if she could not slay The God Emperor. After returning to The Great Temple, he visited Sarak’s bones, thinking about how he had never truly been tested in battle, nor had he ever faced death. He held no victories nor triumphs.
“I will not let the lands you so loved be destroyed. I’ll fight for it. I’ll defend it against the humans with everything I have.”
– The Holy Kromak, To Sarak’s Bones, 20 AVE.
He visited The Oracle beneath Arkos-Tul, a strange serpentine creature, to speak about the coming human invasion. The Oracle reminded him that he would have to sacrifice the only thing he still cared to lose if he wanted it to ‘wake the desert‘, an act that would consume the armies of the humans. When Krom offered to sacrifice thousands of willing followers in place of the one he most cared for, The Oracle dismissed his offer.
Refusing to make the sacrifice, he choose to prepare for war without the creature’s aid. He marched into the throne room and commanded his most trusted advisor, Obaros, to summon every nomad tribe to Arkos-Tul, intending to gather an army to face the humans, should his assassins fail once more.
