Importance
The City of Valia is a massive city upon the southern coast of The Human Basin, which was founded by a nomadic tribe of humans.
History
Founding
Generations before the year 400 BVE, a wandering tribe of humans migrated down to the southern coast of The Human Basin. Though they remained nomadic, traveling to raid other tribes and settlements, they grew to consider the area where Valia would one day rise to be their homeland. They constructed a small temple in the area known as The Azira Temple, named after the Azira Worms found within the region, which was the only permanent structure their tribe created. Though they left the temple abandoned for long stretches of time, they returned periodically. They often brought captured women, conducting rituals that blessed the wombs of the women before their warriors bred them. Later, the ruling Chief of the tribe alone enjoyed the honor of bringing a selected mate to the temple, hoping to be blessed by the tribe’s fertility goddess with an heir that would lead the tribe to greatness.
In the year 403 BVE, their Chief, The Dreadful Garix, raided a distant settlement and captured a young woman named Valia, among others. Selecting Valia to give birth to his heir, Garix brought her to the temple and forcefully impregnated her in front of her father, Lavil. Kept as his personal concubine, Valia gave birth to his successor. She raised their son, Garix II, to be a better man than his father. After becoming the chief of the tribe, Garix The Red, as he became known due to his crimson hair, sought to change the bloody ways of his people by ceasing their nomadic lifestyle and putting an end to their tradition of raiding others. In the year 370 BVE, he founded the settlement of Valia along the southern coast near The Azira Temple, naming his new home after his beloved mother who had taught him to be better.
Reign Of Worms
In the year 309 BVE, a cult arose within Valia which worshipped the local Azira Worms as living incarnations of their goddess. Known as The Cult of Azira, they became the primary belief system for the people of Valia when the reigning Chief, Lavix, accepted their teachings. Believing their ancestors had used The Azira Temple nearby to worship a goddess named Azira, Lavix was convinced that he would be granted a worthy heir if he honored his goddess. He selected one of his daughters to be sacrificed by binding her and submerging her in thousands of Azira Worms within the ancient temple. She was left for several days to be sexually stimulated by the worms, believing the goddess herself was caressing and exploring her body. After being freed from the pit, Chief Lavix allowed the men of Valia to violate her until she was proven to be pregnant, convinced Azira had been satisfied and would permit the best seed to take hold to conceive an extraordinary heir for Lavix. His resulting grandson and successor, Lavix II, committed the same deed by sacrificing his own daughter, sealing the ritual as tradition.
After the ascension of Chief Garix IV’s grandson and successor, Lavix III, in the year 183 BVE, the beliefs of The Cult of Azira gradually began to falter.
High-Chiefdom
Following the reign of Lavix III, the settlement of Valia began to gradually expand as they used their position along the coast to their advantage, trading with other human settlements via a fleet of ships. Growing wealthy and powerful, they both conquered and accepted other settlements beneath their rule, forming The High-Chiefdom of Valia.
Sometime around the year 100 BVE, during the reign of High-Chief Jin, the people of Valia grew weary of their ruler’s leadership. A brutal tyrant with twenty concubines, High-Chief Jin was eventually dragged into the rainforest around Valia and burned by his people. His many rivals each claimed a charred bone and a concubine as treasonous trophies before placing Jin’s infant son upon his throne as their puppet.
Valia continued to rise to become one of the most powerful High-Chiefdoms in The Southern Human Basin. After the year 5 BVE, however, they were overshadowed by the rise of a new kingdom nearby known as The Kingdom of Vaidrin.
The Valia District
In the year 4 BVE, High-Chief Linnax of Valia sent a message to God King Dominax, the ruler of the new Kingdom of Vaidrin, challenging the rising conqueror to a battle. Having joined with the High-Chiefs of Drifia, Arcia, Salrin, Ardin, and Ravrin, Linnax stated that he and his allies sought to waste years and the lives of many warriors fighting against Vaidrin’s aggressive expansion. Instead, he vowed that if he and his allies were defeated in a single battle, they would kneel before God King Dominax and pledge their lands to his throne. If they were instead victorious, he vowed to offer no mercy in marching to claim Vaidrin for himself.
On the 12th of Twic, 3 BVE, High-Chief Linnax and his allies lost the battle, later known as The Battle of Unification, sealing the fate of Valia, among others. Upholding his vow, Linnax pledged himself to God King Dominax’s throne, betraying one of his allies, Irith, and offering her as a gift to Dominax. Valia officially became a part of The Kingdom of Vaidrin shortly after.
In the year 1 AVE, The Kingdom of Vaidrin was officially restructured into The Vaid Empire. During the restructuring, God Emperor Dominax introduced a new hierarchy, reforming all High-Chiefdoms into districts. Valia, now classified as a city, became The Capital of the new Valia District, with High Lord Linnax permitted to keep his throne. Under the new imperial tradition of heraldry, Linnax created House Liax, the ruling House of Valia.
Under The Vaid Empire, The City of Valia and The Valia District flourished. In the decades following The Empire’s rise, High Lord Linnax utilized the prosperity of his city to greatly expand his family’s stronghold into a massive palace, named Castle Valia.
Landmarks
The Azira Temple
As the first permanent structure constructed near the southern coast, The Azira Temple was built long before the year 400 BVE. It was a small circular structure made of grey stone bricks and a wooden dome, containing a single round chamber. Located in the rainforest near Valia, the temple gradually fell to ruin. By the rise of The Vaid Empire, the structure was forgotten and abandoned.
