Importance

Knowledge Holder Mauron was the ruler of The Holy City of Aslyd during the time of The Mother of Tentacle‘s rise. A wise ruler, his city enjoyed decades of stability under his guidance. After receiving visions of the coming apocalypse at the hands of a tentacled swarm, he betrayed and murdered the great one, Onaalag, though failed to slay the beast’s pregnant mate. He worked to hunt down Aifa and her tentacled spawn, hoping to prevent the destruction of his people.

Biography

Whispers

Mauron was born during the year 806 BVE in The Holy City of Aslyd. Though he enjoyed a life that was entirely ordinary for the first decade of his life, his entire existence was drastically altered the moment the former ruler of the ancient city passed away of old age. As The Knowledge Holder, the old man had been selected by The Great One to hear his whispers inside his head, the only living man that was permitted to receive whatever knowledge the ancient beast below Aslyd desired to grant the population. When he died, The Great One, Onaalag, selected another to replace him, just as had occurred since the founding of the city. Hearing whispering inside his head the moment his ruler passed away, Mauron realized that he had been selected.

Named the new Knowledge Holder and ruler of Aslyd, he was forced to ascend the throne. Though the burden had been placed upon him without a choice, he rose to accept his new duty and did all he could to rule over his people wisely, working to bring them prosperity. The whispers of Onaalag became a constant companion inside his head, allowing him to act upon whatever assistance and knowledge The Great One sought to provide. In return, as was tradition, young women were brought as fertile offerings to Onaalag, sacrifices that the tentacled beast could impregnate to satisfy his nature. Named Holy Mothers, their pregnant bellies were cut open before they could give birth, preventing Onaalag’s tentacled spawn from spreading.

After becoming a man, Mauron produced his first child, Sarui. Tended to by the priestesses of Aslyd, they served his every need. Occasionally they fell pregnant, providing their blessed ruler with healthy daughters. His favorite, The Head Priestess Gima, granted him his youngest daughter. A loyal servant rather than his love, she served dutifully at his side as his closest advisor.

Betrayal

Sometime before the year 768 BVE, after a long and stable reign, Mauron was granted visions from Onaalag that showed a horrid future, an apocalypse born from the great one’s loins. He saw the destruction of his city after being swarmed by tentacled monstrosities that slaughtered all of the men and enslaved every Cavari woman, turning them into mindless wombs to birth more horrors. Driven to madness by the coming future, Mauron committed himself to murder The Great One, hoping to prevent such a terrible future. As his plans to prevent the coming apocalypses took form, he fought to keep up appearances, maintaining the facade of a calm and rational ruler.

On the 12th of Onis, 768 BVE, several captives were brought before him, wild Cavaries that had been captured living deep within the jungle. Completing his duty, he selected the next Holy Mother to serve The Great One, asking the captured group what Onaalag’s name was. The one who answered, a young woman named Aifa, unknowingly proved that she too could hear The Great One’s whispers, and thus he sealed her fate as the next sacrifice. His guards dragged her to Onaalag’s lair beneath the ziggurat to be bred.

“Ah, we have our Holy Mother. The sacrifices we make shall ensure the future. Step bravely, for you are blessed to serve The Creator’s first creation.”

– Mauron, To Aifa, 768 BVE.

On the 20th of Onis, 768 BVE, Mauron stood atop The Central Ziggurat to welcome the sight of The Creator‘s floating vessel, The Chimira, as The Creator arrived every decade to observe the progress of his creations below while he hovered above the city. At the side of his daughter, Sarui, Mauron quietly prayed for his creator’s forgiveness, feeling immense guilt at his plan to murder Onaalag after The Creator’s departure.

Several months later, he witnessed The Creator’s departure. With his deeds safe from the gaze of his god, Mauron gave a secret command to his personal slave, Thuron. The slave granted his orders to several trusted warriors, led by High Seeker Audir, inciting them to enact his plan. On the 19th of Fixuin, Onaalag was murdered by his command, though Aifa managed to escape. Knowing she was pregnant with The Great One’s tentacled offspring, and knowing his betrayal would be for nothing if the child lived, he sent forth groups of warriors led by The High Seeker Himself to hunt her down.

On the 30th of Twic, 767 BVE, he received word that nothing had been found. Hoping that Aifa had been killed by a monstrosity after her escape, though doubting, he endured his secret.

Sexual Proclivities

Sexuality

Mauron was an ordinary man. He greatly enjoyed the touch of his beautiful priestesses, and happily cared for the children they gave him when they fell pregnant from his seed.

Legacy

As the last Knowledge Holder of Aslyd, Mauron witnessed the destruction of all he cared for at the hands of The Mother of Tentacles. Though those few Cavaries that remained were never aware of all he did while attempting to prevent their destruction, Mauron bravely endured the maddening knowledge of the coming apocalypse and took whatever action he could to save his people.

He likely would have been disgusted by his seedling descendants, yet his untainted bloodline lived on through his Cavari descendants. Though the last surviving group of his people were kept as breeding slaves for their tentacled overlords for generations, they unknowingly carried the memory of the last Knowledge Holder in their veins.
